Why walking in Taino footsteps? The area was inhabited in pre-Columbian times by the indigenous people of the island, or at least occasionally visited at times. Petroglyphs on the walls of the numerous caves in the area suggest this. The name “Haitises” derives from “Aiti” or “Haiti”, the name of the Taínos for hills or hilly/mountainous land. The elevations in the Haitises are not high (barely 100 m), but quite steep so that the name is understandable. After Conquista, the area remained uninhabited for a long time; It was only in the 19th and early 20th centuries that agriculture was carried out in parts of Haiti’s, cultivating all the beets that were used for starch production and exported. For this purpose, a railway was built and in the Bahía de San Lorenzo, a port facility whose remains are still to be found today. In 1968, about 200 km² were protected as a so-called forest reserve. As a result, the reserve was converted into a national park and expanded several times, most recently in 1996.
